When Jeni first started making ice cream at a public market in the 1990s, Jeni would peruse the shelves of a nearby spice stand during slow times. This is where she first discovered Chinese 5-Spice—an interesting blend that smelled just like her grandmother’s pumpkin pie, only less cloying. Inspired, Jeni bought heirloom pumpkins at the market, roasted them until sweet, then pureed them with honey, brown sugar, cream, and her new-found spices. It was an instant hit.
